When things go wrong

Even for someone who's experienced with sex, things don't always go as smoothly as 'in the movies'. Things can happen during sex that might be embarrassing or hurt. The first time can also be nerve wrecking and involve fumbling around a bit. Even if you just want to forget about what happened, sometimes it is necessary to talk so you can sort things out. It usually works out better in the long run. For example, if you thought your penis hurt during sex or you think contraception failed, it is important you let your partner know. Also, if someone did something that you didn't like, you should tell that person to stop or try it differently next time.

If possible, try to avoid the conversation while you're 'in the moment', just before or after sex. You're not only likely to be naked but also feel a bit more emotionally vulnerable. Be honest and say you think it's awkward to talk if you think so. Talk about yourself and how you feel, not just what you think the other person thinks or feels.
